Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbander in Gujarat. He belonged to a rich family. He went to England to study law. He practiced law at the Bombay High court for some time. 

Once in South Africa, he was thrown out of a train, though he had a valid ticket, by the Englishmen. 

He entered politics and fought for the freedom of India. He encouraged the use of Indian goods. He used to weave on a spinning wheel. 

His ways of fighting were non-violent. He protested against tax on salt because it was used by the poor. He launched Quit India Movement. Many people joined him. His efforts led to independence. 

He was a religious person. He said, "CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS". 

He was shot dead on January 30, 1948 by Nathu Ram Godse. Before dying he said, "Hey Ram". 

Mahatma Gandhi is fondly called as the `Father of the Nation'.
