Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1940, at Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh. He belonged to a lower middle class family. 

He took his early education from Kashi Vidyapeeth. After completing his education he joined the freedom struggle. As he himself was poor, he wanted to fight poverty. 

He held an important office in the Indian National Congress. He became Union Minister several times. He became Minister of Commerce, Industry, Home Affairs and Railways. 

He discharged his duties effectively and satisfactorily. After the death of Sri Jawaharlal Nehru, he became the second Prime Minister of India. This is how he rose from utter poverty to the highest position. He had to face many problems like famine, poverty and war with Pakistan. He came out successful. 

During his tenure as Prime Minister he died at Tashkent on January 11, 1966. He set an example to all the poor people.
