THE GANGA

Ganga is a famous river of India. Hindus worship her. The epic Mahabharata starts with the story of King Shantanu marrying her.

Her son is Bhisma. He was a totally selfless and sacrificing person. He vowed never to many.

Ganga originates at Gangotri in the Himalayas. It flows from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. It is known by many names like Mandakini, Alak Nanda, Bhagirathi etc.

King Bhagirath performed many penances for her to descend from the spiritual sky. She descended into the locks of the matted hair of Lord Shiva. From there she followed Bhagirath and brought back to life, the 60,000 sons of King Sagan.

At Har-Ki-Paudi in Haridwar, people take bath on auspicious occasions to get rid of their sins. They also offer ablutions. At Kasi people cremate their dead ones on the banks of Ganga.

Before Ganga meets Bay of Bengal, it forms Ganga Sagar. People take their holy bath at this place also. At Haridwar, Ganga splits into seven streams to satisfy the seven sages.
